Limousines: A Sweet Story of Luxury and Accommodation

The limousine, like many things associated with opulence and style, originated in France. And you just thought it came into the existence with the NBA.

So, where did the first limo come from? In the region of France known as Limousin, shepherds tending flocks in the fields developed a hooded out garment to protect themselves from the elements. These were called limousines. This is not a joke. This is absolutely true. Trust me. Read on and it all becomes clear.

When the first motor carriages were being developed in the early 1900's, the majority were open vehicles. When the first hoods were placed over the passenger compartments to provide more protection and comfort, these carriages were given the name limousines after the French shepherd garment. A carriage maker from the Limousin region might well have coined the name. See, I told you it was true.

In 1921, in New York City, a man named James P. Carey recognized a demand for a ride for hire that had a bit more style than the common taxi cab. He introduced chauffeur driven luxury cars as an alternative. This launched a business that made him a millionaire and is still in operation today. The concept of limousine was being narrowed down to refer to a high luxury automobile usually driven by a chauffeur.

It was another New Yorker named David Klein who made the "stretch" limousine popular. In response to a taxi strike in 1970, Klein got the idea of making special stretch luxury limousines available for hire in big cities across the United States. The stretch limousine became a standard for the rich and famous and a mark of importance and wealth. They became associated with government figures as well and there was a Presidential Limousine made for the use of the United States President.

There is an American folk image of limousine after limousine pulling up at special Hollywood events discharging their rich and famous passengers. The sight of a stretch limousine passing on a highway would cause necks to turn and eyes to stare seeking a glimpse of the special person inside. The limousine became the darling vehicle of the rich and they outdid themselves to make them longer and longer. The insides contained everything from hot tubs to putting greens.
This association with the rich led to the limousine rental business. For special events, anyone could feel important, rich, and famous. It became common to rent limousines for proms and special romantic dates. Limousines carried the mourning families behind the hearse in funeral processions. Although the cost of ownership kept limousines from being owned by the average person, they were able to feel all eyes turning to them even if for just a few hours on one special day. All of this from a start in a field in France by shepherds trying to stay dry.

Self-parking Lexus sold in Australia

Lexus, the luxury car division of Toyota Motor Corp., has introduced a technology that allows a car to reverse park by itself. The Lexus vehicle equipped with the technology has been set on sale in Australia at an expensive price of $200,000.

The new Lexus LS600hL gets the Intelligence Parking Assistance system as a standard feature. The vehicle is considered the first petrol-electric vehicle hybrid limousine in the world. Two versions of the car are priced between $225,000 and $250,000. But, despite that cost, the vehicle will be sold out until mid next year.

Though there are sixty-three customers who have already ordered, only five units of the new Lexus LS600hL will be imported to Australia every month. The demand in other countries has boosted this controlled supply.

The Australian introduction has been delayed for two years due to the previous concerns of Lexus involving public liability.

According to John Roca, the boss in Lexus Australia, No, it doesnât mean youre a bad driver. People who buy this car are interested in technology. They may not necessarily use park assist but they want to know they have the latest gadget.
The reverse, or parallel parking system, works with the use of a camera and a series of radar sensors placed in the bumpers. Upon pulling up alongside an empty parking space, the system determines whether the car will fit up in the gap between the two parked cars. Then, at a press of a button, the vehicle steer itself into position.
However, Lexus has given a warning, The driver, naturally, must continue to exercise all due care and diligence when using the parking system. In addition, [The parking system] is designed as a driver-assist device only and should not be used as a substitute for skilled driving and safe parking practices. The driver should watch the area into which the vehicle is to be reversed.

Aside from being equipped with quality Lexus head gasket, the self-parking Lexus will also be sustained with other world-first technology, which includes rear seats that have a massage function and can be reclined like business-class aircraft seats. There will also be an air-conditioning system that measures the occupants body temperature and could adjust the temperature of the car accordingly. There are also headlight lamps that are designed to view around corners. The vehicle will also have more airbags than most other limousines at a total of 11, including two under-thigh airbags in the rear to prevent pelvic and abdominal injuries in a crash.

Most likely, the self-parking technology will also be incorporated on the next generation Toyota Prius petrol-electric hybrid car. The vehicle is due two years from now. With an estimated price of $45,000, the technology is placed within reach of family-car customers.

The Porsche: Germany's Top Luxury Car

When people think luxury, they think of the Porsche. With its cars' high price tags, powerful engines, and smooth, sleek lines, there's no question that Porsche is one of the most prestigious automakers in the world.

The genius behind the company was a man named Ferdinand Porsche. Born in what is now the Czech Republic in 1875, he demonstrated astonishing mechanical aptitude at a young age. He was the third of five children. His father, a plumber, expected Ferdinand to take over the family business--but Ferdinand had other dreams. At eighteen, after completing an apprenticeship with his father, he took a job in Vienna with the firm Bela Egger & Co.

At the company, Ferdinand demonstrated impressive skill for his age. He built an electric wheel-hub motor, and was soon attracted across the street to rival Jakob Lohner & Co. This company was actively developing electric cars, and Ferdinand felt his skills could be better used there. And they were--three years after joining the company, Porsche had built an entire electric car.

This historic car, the Lohner-Porsche, was innovative in several ways. The two wheel-hub motors on the front wheels had an output of 2.5 horsepower, generated an astonishing 120-rpm, and were completely silent. The battery could travel 50 kilometers between recharges. The car could travel up to 50 kilometers per hour.

But this was only the beginning. Porsche began experimenting with internal-combustion motors, and his next car, the System Mixt, had internal-combustion wheel hub motors. Porsche went on to win several speed records and widespread acclaim--his name was now well-known not just in engineering circles, but also to the general public. In 1905, he won the coveted Poetting Prize as Austria's most outstanding engineer.

In 1906, Austro-Daimler offered to make Porsche its chief designer. Porsche accepted the job, and in 1910 he designed an 85-horsepower car for the Prince Henry Trial, an international competition named in honor of Prince Henry of Prussia. Porsche's designs won the top three places at the trial.

With the start of World War I, Austro-Daimler began to focus on producing war materials such as trucks, airplane engines, and mechanized weapons. Porsche saw his star rise further in these years; in 1916, he became Austro-Daimler's managing director. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate from Vienna Technical University. This honor was very meaningful to him. Ever afterwards, he was known as Professor or Doctor Porsche, and incorporated the honor into his company's name.

Dr. Porsche had competed in rallies and speed competitions since he became interested in building cars. He believed that by building racecars, he could improve the performance of all his vehicles. As a result, he developed an interest in building small, light, high-performance cars.
Unfortunately, he and Austro-Daimler did not see eye to eye. The company's board did not agree with the direction Porsche wanted to take, and eventually Porsche left. He went on to a position at Steyr, but the Great Depression made car-making an unprofitable business. The company collapsed, and Dr. Porsche was unemployed.

So he moved to Stuttgart, a town with a strong connection to the automotive industry and the location of several prominent car companies, and started a consulting business. His team consisted of people he had worked with before, and a few family members--including his son, Ferry.

The company's aim was to help other companies design better cars--not to design them itself. So in the beginning, none of the cars the company designed had the Porsche name. That changed when the government, now under Nazi control, came to Porsche with a project: design a car "for the people"--a Volkswagen.

Porsche as a company has always been closely tied to Volkswagen; many of the components of the early Porsche cars came from the Volkswagen Beetle. Porsche's Volkswagens were popular, affordable cars that survived after the collapse of the Third Reich. Porsche and his son, and later his grandson, went on to design such ground-breaking cars as the 911, the Boxster, the Spyder, the Roadster, the Carrera, and many others.

Porsche survived the Great Depression, the Third Reich, and dramatic corporate restructuring to keep its place at the forefront of the automotive industry. No matter the country, everyone knows that Porsche cars stand for luxury, power, and performance.

2007 BMW 130i Coupe

One of the things that you can always rely on with BMW is that it will always have the capacity to surprise. Just when you think you have them tagged as the ultimate in big, luxurious fast cars, along they come with the 2007 BMW 130i Coupe, just to throw you off course.

When BMW first introduced this hatchback model, it was a revelation to a car buying public that saw BMW as possibly the last car manufacturer to come out with a hot hatch to go up against the likes of Volkswagen, Ford and Fiat. However, not only did the BMW 130i go up against these established manufacturers, they more than held their own performance-wise. And they did it while offering excellent fuel economy too.

Now, with the introduction of the 2007 model, the BMW 130i is ready to take on all-comers again, especially with the new line-up of features it has.

Fuel Economy
One of the key features in the BMW 130i Coupe is Brake Energy Regeneration, which works by using an Intelligent alternator Control, alongside an Absorbent Glass Mat battery. By using these three features in conjunction with one another, the car recycles any lost energy it uses up, and this in turn saves fuel.

Another way that the BMW130i Coupe saves energy is by using Electric Power Steering, as opposed to the more traditional hydraulic method. What this enables the car to do is only use the power steering when it's really needed - turning a corner, for example. The energy savings here are excellent, which in turn saves on fuel use.

Technology
As well as the above features, the new 2007 BMW 130i Coupe also comes with a plethora of technological adjustments on this year's model. Due to the new engine variants that the model has, you can now save up to an average of $500 on your yearly fuel cost (if you drive an average 12,000 miles annually).

Add to this the new Dynamic Stability Control, coupled with BMW's legendary Dynamic Traction Control, and the BMW 130i is not only one of they most comfortable cars to drive, it's also one of the safest. This is thanks to the 50/50 weight distribution, as well as the rear wheel drive that the car enjoys.

What the 130i comes with as extra, as opposed to the other models in the BMW 1 range, is Hill Start Assistant, Brake Pre-tensioning, Brake Drying, Brake Fade Compensation and Soft Stop to ensure safety is paramount at all times, as well as fantastic performance.

Styling
One of the things that can't be leveled at the 2007 BMW 130i Coupe is a problem with its design. It's an intensely good-looking car, and one that will definitely stand out from the crowd.
The kidney grill at the front of the car is now larger, and apart from improving the airflow to the engine, it also gives the car added venom in looks. The spoilers, both front and rear, have also been redesigned, and now look like they were made for one of the 130's more illustrious BMW stable mates.

Performance
Of course, what everyone wants to know is how the car performs, and here the 2007 BMW 130i Coupe doesn't disappoint. In fact, when you compare it with similar cars from BMW's competitors, it's more than a match.

Weighing in with over 265.00 BHP, combined with a torque of 315.00 NM, the 310i can go from 0-60 mph in just 5.9 seconds. Its top speed is also impressive for a small car, with it being able to reach 155.4mph easily, even in a limited setting.

Perhaps this isn't surprising when you look under the bonnet, where you'll find a six-cylinder three liter engine purring away, always ready to give you that boost of speed when you need it most. And with 24 valves, with 4 valves to each cylinder, it's a performance that is as smooth as it is impressive.

Extras
If all this isn't good enough for you, then the little extras BMW has given the 130i are the icing on the cake. With a USB port, you can play your favorite tunes on your iPod or MP3 player, all controlled with the steering wheel.

Another Reliable Toyota Truck Infiltrates the Global Market

Toyota has clearly succeeded in creating a mark in the global market as it has become the world's largest automaker by revenue, production, sales and profit. Founded in 1937 by Kiichiro Toyoda, its tradition of building trucks dates back to the second World War when it manufactured simple every Toyota truck for the Japanese Imperial Army. Although the company previously focused on looms, being formerly known as Toyoda Automatic Loom, its new division eventually concentrated on the production of cars. Until now, Toyota is still involved in the textile industry and it still makes automatic looms that are now fully computerized as well as electric sewing machines that are available worldwide.

North America is a major automobile market for Toyota, particularly for the various models of the Toyota truck. In fact, the company has five major assembly plants in North Americaâ€"at Huntsville, Alabama, Georgetown, Kentucky, Princeton, Indiana, San Antonio, Texas, and Buffalo, West Virginia. Meanwhile, a new one is being built in Blue Springs, Mississippi. These assembly plants are responsible for the production of the companys vehicles that include every Toyota truck and sedan. Aside from the design and assembly of these comfortable and reliable vehicles, Toyota is also responsible for the development of components, like the Toyota truck parts, that feature innovative technologies. Some of these advanced characteristics that many drivers love, like the exceptionally durable Toyota Truck parts, are the first mass-produced hybrid gas-electric power system, a four-speed automatic transmission that is electronically controlled and has buttons for power and economy shifting, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the Advanced Parking Guidance System or, quite simply, automatic parking.
Like Toyotas legendary Hilux, which has been tagged as the indestructible car, the 2007 Toyota Tundra is yet another example of a reliable Toyota truck. Having a towing capacity of over 10,000 lbs, a payload capacity of over 2000 lb, and a new 6-speed automatic transmission, the latest Tundra is offered in three engine types. All distinctly powerful in their engine capacity and power, the Toyota Tundra has become quite a success. It is now the best selling foreign full-size half-ton truck. As affirmed by Edmund.com, which awarded the Tundra as the Most Significant Vehicle of the Year and as the Most Wanted Full-size truck, there is just no going wrong with Toyota trucks.

Brabus Widestar based on the Mercedes ML 63

Mercedes Benz-- manufacturer of ML series and producer of quality ML parts like Mercedes ML320 parts -- is one of the favorites of the tuning giant Brabus. Just recently the company engaged in a venture that involves the Mercedes ML 63. This special project has made its debut at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show.

The Brabus Widestar does not only present a new and exciting wide track version of the SUV but also presented the new Monoblock E 23-inch forged wheels and Brabus B63 S performance tuning for the ML 63 with 550 hp/404.8 kW.

The Widestar concept which is available for all current M-Class models combines dynamic looks and maximum functionality. The graceful flowing lines of the fender flares front and back increases the vehicle's width by approximately 4 centimeters. The extra centimeters enhance the car's looks while the wide track improves handling. The multi piece Brabus Monoblock E wheels with size 11 Jx23 were custom fitted for the wide track version of the M-Class. Their forge wheel center ensures an optimal combination of light weight design and maximum strength. The new light alloy wheels are mounted with high performance tires that measure 315/25 R 23.

Brabus has also equipped its Windestar Concept with a control module for the standard Airmatic air suspension that lowers the vehicle's height by approximately 30 millimeters which further enhance its sporty road handling characteristics.

The Brabus Widestar body conversion kit is consists of add-on parts for the doors, and rocker panels that results to a more homogenous transition between the fender flares. There are also a complete front and rear fascias replacements for the production counterparts' front and back. The front spoiler bumper with its three striking air inlets and four integrated auxiliary headlights lends the M-Class more power while minimizing lift on the front axle.

In addition, the combination of the rear spoiler, the rear fascia with integrated diffuser, and four chrome tailpipes of the Brabus stainless-steel sport exhaust system create a remarkable aerodynamic balance. And this very same aerodynamic property of the Brabus Widestar makes it the perfect platform for a tuned version of the ML 63.

The tuned ML 63 was developed by the Brabus motor engineers in the form of a B63 S performance kit. The production V8 engine produces 510 hp/375 kW and fitted with sport air filters together with high-performance metal catalysts and newly programmed engine electronics with custom mapping for ignition and injection. The combination of all these components gives off an increase in power output by 40 hp/31 kW to 550 hp/404.8 kW. The peak torque also increases from 630 Nm to 650 Nm.

Other benefits derived from the Widestar concept includes the ability to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in a matter of 4.9 seconds. Similarly the engine tuning as well as the installation of the Brabus V/max unit increases top speed from 250 km/h to 275 km/h.

Safety features were made even better by the Brabus Widestar concept like for instance using high-performance brake system which features 12-piston aluminum fixed calipers with vented and cross-drilled 380 x 36 millimeter discs on the front axle. Plus add to it the 355x28mm brake discs and 6 piston calipers in the rear enables this Widestar brake system to deliver an impressive stopping power that is comparable to purebred sports cars.

Interior designing is another specialty of the Brabus and for the M-Class they have created an exclusive interior options consisting of stainless steel door sills with illuminated Brabus logo, an ergonomically shaped sport steering wheel and a leather covered door trim pieces to upgrade the factory leather. The Brabus exclusive leather interiors were made from carefully crafted combinations of the finest Mastik leather and Alcantara.

The production front seats were also equipped with special rear consoles that reach all the way to the headrests in which a seven-inch 16:9 LCD screens with integrated DVD player. There is also an electric folding table made from precious wood added to complete the interior.

Make a Saturn Shine on the Road

Saturn Automobile, a car brand exclusively launched by the automaker giant General Motors in 1990, has long impressed car enthusiasts with the satisfactory performance it delivers. This can be attributed to the several Saturn parts of unparalleled quality that make up the heavenly Saturn vehicle.

Known as an environmentally conscious automaker since its establishment, Saturn has ensured that all its manufacturing processes are aimed at protecting the environment. This even started many years before the invention of the hybrid vehicles and when auto engineers were still on the initial stage of researching alternative fuels. Saturn was on innovative usage of flexible plastics for some Saturn parts like the side panels to avoid minor dents; until it recently announced that it would discontinue this procedure.

However, Saturn promised that it would keep on incorporating features of the latest technology in all model line-ups. These would include the L-Series, S-Series, VUE SUV, ION compact car, Sky roadster, and many more. Saturn parts like the engine, transmission, braking components, chassis, wheels, seats, hoods, fenders, and others would remain exclusive to specific models to maintain their uniqueness. This would also provide customers with a wide selection to choose from.

If car owners should decide to replace old or worn-out Saturn parts or simply to upgrade to innovative ones, auto parts online retailers could easily be accessed at one’s convenience. Purchasing products on the internet has been proven to be most practical especially among busy consumers as this could save a lot of money, time, and effort. Most commercial websites could be considered trustworthy as they sell only genuine Saturn parts and accessories at reasonable prices. Many great deals could be definitely found online as long as one would be so much willing to take time to research and compare all information that could be gathered.

Gearing Up Your Car Today

Wouldn't it be nice to be justly rewarded to be green conscious? Well, in this latest move by the B.C. government which offers to as much as $2,000 on fuel efficient hybrid cars, people are getting a feel of just how it is to make that shift to these hybrid and fuel efficient cars.

True enough, such a rewarding option has also helped car manufacturers like Toyota to benefit from this new development. One of the top model hybrid cars of this Japan-based car manufacturing, the Prius, has been the prime target of consumers for their transportation needs today. And mind you, the Prius does not come cheap. One unit alone costs $32,000, not a cheap price to pay for hybrid cars offered for a greener outlook in the world today.

Incentives are known to be good rewards that can entice a market and make them fully aware of the actual intent of governments; that of which is to feel how it is to be rewarded by being green.

In a move to help promote the shift from gas to electricity as their main source of power, various groups have experimented and come up with an electricity reliant car to reduce the gas emissions that have been key contributors to overall pollution and impending global warming.
While the big car manufacturers have not yet gone on the aggressive development for these alternative cars, a lot of the old cars that are mostly left to rot or be junked have been the guinea pigs for this alternative source of energy and fuel. Some may question the reliability of such conversions but it is best to get in depth to see how car engines can be transformed into this green movement as far as vehicles are concerned.

Whether you prefer a Toyota, a Honda or even the high-end luxury cars such as Mercedes Benz, green standard compliant cars would normally have less impact on any potential buyer. Reason for such is usually due to the fact that they are too bent on checking out the features such as power features and of course bonuses installed if and when they purchase cars.

In these cases, green standards are usually taking a backseat. Pollution control due to greenhouse gas emissions are almost a given when you purchase a new car. Maintenance is another thing but if you are buying a new car, chances are, these issues will only set in after 5 years and up.

Just think of it. Why would anyone buy a car that would be a smoke-belching vehicle. It is like buying a second-hand car for nothing special.

Most of us really want to live luxuriously and comfortably. Consumers dream of having their own means of transportation and while cars are within their reach, there is another issue that needs to be addressed...pollution and greenhouse gases.

The air we breathe right now is contaminated. We can smell it and that awkward and different smell is the participation of pollution in the usually clean air we breathe. While people are more concerned of living better lives with good transportation, their health may be in jeopardy.
